The annual Sheep Shearing Event takes place at the historic Highland Springs Ranch & Inn (est. 1884) located in Cherry Valley, CA, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles. This family friendly event gives a close-up view of how our sheep are shorn and what we do with the wool. Guests can wash the wool, learn about natural dyes and also visit our farm to feed our organic sheep.

THE SHEEP SHEARER

This special event will feature Graciano, the sheep shearer, who will demonstrate how the sheep are freed from their winter woolies at 123 Farm. Participants will also be able to see what happens to the fleece once it leaves the sheep (washing, carding, dyeing, and spinning) and to meet our lambs that have been born recently.

Centered around the Organic Galleries, the event offers various sheep and wool related activities including various crafts, hands-on experiences in wool processing and food made in-house using organic ingredients from our farm.

A Sheep Shearing & Sheep Feeding View the sheep shearer work on removing the winter woolies from our sheep. Visit our shorn sheep and feed them some olive branches. B Wool Felting, Dream Catchers & Craft Classes Some of our more popular classes, learn how to make your own felted sheep or dream catcher. From rug hooking to knitting, register for one of our many craft classes using wool. C Kids Crafts Sheep-themed activities for the little ones. D Wool Processing & Natural Dyes Experience the different stages of wool processing, from washing and drying to fleece carding. Learn how some of our wool is dyed naturally and also try your hand at drop spindling. E Food Court & Baa-r Food made in-house using organic ingredients from our farm. Some dishes are made with our own organic lamb. Vegetarian and gluten free options available. Come to the Black Sheep Baa-r for St. Patrick's Day inspired beers and our signature lavender cocktails. F Organic Galleries Twelve vintage cottages converted into farm-themed shops based on products from our farm (honey, lavender, tea, etc.). Try some housemade organic ice cream from the Sweet Barn or enjoy treats in the cafe. Live Music Live music provided by Echo Sparks. Vendors Various knitting and wool associations. SHEEP CHEESE & WINE PAIRING

Enjoy the various flavors of goat cheese & sheep cheese, paired with a complementary wine. A three course menu will be served starting with cheese and fruit paired with a blush wine. Our second course will entail cheese paired with sheep kebabs and a red wine. For the third course, you can enjoy the subtle flavors of a light cheese paired with a tasty dessert bar and a light wine.

 

Price is $25 per person and reservations are required. Adults 21 and over only please.

There are no menu substitutions. Please call 951-845-1151 to make reservations. The Cheese & Wine Pairing will be held in the Organic Galleries Cafe.

ACTIVITIES

Sign up for craft classes involving wool! Spaces are limited, so we highly recommend you sign up online. There will be a few spots available in person.

Felting Class

Make your own felted lamb using wool from our sheep. Limited to 15 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Dream Catcher Crafts

Participants will create and take home their own dream catcher. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Wool Weaving

Participants will learn weaving using cardboard looms and make a bracelet. Limited to 10 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Knitting Class

Participants will learn the basics of knitting and make bracelets using knitting needles and yarn. Limited to 10 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Crochet Class

Participants will use hooks and worsted weight yarn to make a bracelet.  Participants will keep the materials. Limited to 10 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Rug Punching

Participants will make "rug mugs"( or coasters) and learn the basics of punch needle rug hooking. Limited to 6 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Spinning Demonstration

Participants will try using spindles during the class and learn the art of spinning fiber.

Participants will use 123 Farm wool to create a piece of felt fabric to take home. Limited to 6 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Tote Bag Dyeing

Participant will dye their own canvas tote using natural dye and take the wet tote home to dry with instructions on how to finish the process. Limited to 8 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot.

Sheep Herding Demonstration

This demonstration will show the human/dog partnership and its value on a working sheep farm.  A live simulation of a sheep herding competition will be presented.  Come and see dogs at all levels of training as they help their human handlers with the livestock.

Sheep Feeding

Ongoing throughout the day. Come to the sheep shearing pen to feed our sheep. Feed our sheep an olive branch. Free.

 

Sheep Shearing

View a demonstration of our sheep being shorn of their wool. Demonstrations ongoing 10 am-4 pm. Free.

 

Wool Processing

Learn about wool processing, beginning with wool washing. Free.

 

Natural Dyes

See how natural dyes are made using leaves, herbs and other organic materials from our farm. Try your hand at drop spindling. Free.

 

Chicken Egg Harvest

Join our farmer and help harvest eggs from our free range heirloom hens. Go on a brief guided tour of the vegetable garden. Limited to 35 participants per class. Online registration is highly recommended to ensure spot. Meet beside Workshop Ticket Sales Booth.

Children's Crafts

Activities include finger knitting, arts & crafts, scavenger hunt game and more! Prices vary.

 

Story Time & Craft

Join local Librarian Laura as she reads a storybook on sheep and join her for a simple sheep craft.
